Individual Counseling
Our counselors offer one-on-one sessions lasting 30 or 50 minutes to support you in exploring any personal issues or challenges you may be facing. Students come to the Counseling Center for a wide range of reasons, including:
- Relationship difficulties
- Academic stress and performance anxiety
- Identity exploration (including gender, sexuality, and cultural identity)
- Emotional struggles (e.g., sadness, irritability, or mood swings)
- Sleep problems or fatigue
- Eating concerns or body image issues
- Focus or attention challenges
- Feelings of loneliness or isolation
- Suicidal thoughts or self-harm
- Excessive worry or anxiety
- Navigating major life transitions, such as adjusting to college life
We are here to help with a broad spectrum of concerns and support you in managing life¡¯s challenges in a safe, confidential space.
We understand that telehealth can offer greater accessibility and convenience for many students, reducing barriers to care. After your initial in-person intake appointment and counselor assignment, you and your counselor can discuss whether telehealth is a good option for your ongoing sessions. Telehealth may be especially helpful if:
- You face accessibility challenges
- You¡¯re unwell and prefer to stay home
- You have difficulty commuting to the Counseling Center
We aim to work collaboratively to find the best approach for your individual needs and circumstances. Telehealth appointments are only available to students physically located in Vermont.

Group Counseling
In group counseling, two counselors work together to facilitate a supportive space where students with similar concerns can connect and share their experiences. Group members learn from one another, gain new perspectives, and offer mutual support in a safe and confidential environment. Group counseling is an excellent opportunity to explore personal challenges, develop coping skills, and build a sense of community with others facing similar struggles.
Group topics change every semester. Please reach out to our office to learn about current group offerings.
Groups typically meet once a week for 6 to 8 weeks, with sessions lasting between 1 to 2 hours.
-
Consultation
We offer brief consultations to faculty, staff, students, and guardians seeking advice or guidance on supporting students who may be facing mental health challenges. These consultations provide an opportunity to discuss strategies for effectively helping or supporting students in distress. Whether you¡¯re concerned about a student¡¯s wellbeing or need advice on how to approach sensitive topics, we¡¯re here to help. Please reach out to our office to learn about this service.

We offer a wide variety of services such as facilitating workshops, conducting screening days, crisis event responses/debriefing, liaison relationships with departments and organizations on campus, attending or being present at campus events to reduce stigma and support other departments, interviews, tabling, social media, psychoeducational materials (printed and web-based), and community campaigns.
Presentations and workshops are offered to Champlain students in a variety of settings. We accept requests submitted by students, faculty, and staff.
Please email us at counselingcenter@champlain.edu to request a program, interview, or assistance with a school project. Describe your request in detail. We must have a minimum of three weeks advance notice to consider your request. We will be in touch within one week after receiving the request form.

Medication Management
The Counseling Center partners with the Student Health Center for psychiatric medication management. However, psychiatry services on campus and in the surrounding community are extremely limited and we do not have the capacity to manage all students’ medications. We suggest you schedule follow-up appointments with your home healthcare provider well in advance to correspond with school breaks and other visits home. If your home healthcare provider would like to be in touch with the Student Health Center directly to provide additional support, we are happy to do so, provided we have a signed release on file.
